Project Description
SCILENCE is a response to our new era of biotechnology that is transforming our body, society, economy, and world. People now have the power to patent, combine, and even create new forms of life. Such power requires a completely new set of laws, ethics, and education. These advancements affect everyone on the planet and we all have a stake in its impact and use.
SCILENCE explores biotechnology, specifically genetic engineering, transgenics,
cloning, and the patenting of life. It is a project of combination, not intended
to judge or condemn, revealing the conscious and unconscious sentiments and
scratching the surface of this constantly evolving field.
SCILENCE
weaves its way through this thorny, varied, and bizarre world, traveling past
many narratives, never fully arriving at one. The work defies its sections,
fusing each idea into the next, mirroring the dancers who become attached both
invisibly and visibly. Their bodies are altered in the process and transformed
into something not quite identifiable. Rael (a cloning leader claimed to have
been contacted by aliens) answers increasingly difficult questions to his work
and philosophy while two women slowly move in the distance. A children’s
program starts with a transgenic hip-hop pig and ends with the first animal-human
organ transplant. A pro-cloning youth group presents their brochures and talks
back to the audience. Inside all these constructions an unnamed space is created,
one that transforms the narratives into a slipstream of contextual goo, which
cross-fades from one world to the next.
Set to music by Loren Dempster, Scilence has been performed twice as works-in-progress, first at the Tank in the spring of 2007 and then at White Wave in the fall of 2007. The performance will conclude with a diverse panel of artists, authors, scientists, and activists involved in the field of biotechnology. The audience can ask them questions and comment on the performance. It’s a chance for everyone to have a dialogue on this potent issue.
