Artist Statement
The poetics of my work embrace the world.
It is my way inside what is usually looked over.
The interrelationship of life on earth is beyond what we can think. Poetics is a means to communicate what is not easily articulated.
I use text, song, and video but dance is my love. Our lives begin and end with the body, our one interface we have to relate to the world. It is the body's voice that fascinates me. It speaks of evolution and landcape, it holds all our previous selves and the potential of our future ones.
My dances are drawn out of the present ages disconnects. The disconnect of human from nature. The disconnect of families from each other. The disconnect of reality from fiction. These disconnects are born from the illusion we are alone. The fabrication of journalism and the spectacle of entertainment leaves us unsure of where we are, what is around us, and how to interact with our most basic resources.
My work is an experiment in reconnection. I want to breakdown the preconceptions that control how we relate with each other and the world. Through a thought or an image we can reclaim what is cheapened by commodity and breathe new sentiment into what we “think” about our environments.
The human has a great power of assigning sentiment. We do it with old teddy bears and crumpled up notes and letters. Why not attempt to re-assign sentiment off of movie stars and sports teams and on to forests and rivers, off of advertisements and sensationalism and onto diversity and local sustainability.
The work is not editorials, I do not wish to lecture or “teach” rather the work is the first step toward dialogue. What is the way to confront these deep relationships which we engage in everyday and rarely question? The intimacy that we blindly share yet cannot touch and do not feel. It is in this field of grey that my artistry is born. Inside my own instability I locate the seeds for my vision.
I reclaim what was already there but invisible. I do communicate and I work to make the dance highly accessible but I am tired of summaries and opinions. I move towards meaning, with my eyes closed, feeling for the light.
